The Sewing Machine

by Jordan

A sewing machine is a textile machine used to assemble pieces of fabric and other material together with a thread or wire. Before its invention, people use to sewed by hand, which is an art form used by human since the primitive time. In 1755, Charles Wiesenthal, a German immigrant invented a needle specially designed for the use of a mechanical machine. Unfortunately, no one had been able to invent a mechanical device that could use the needle. The first sewing machine was invented by an Englishman called Thomas Saint in 1790. It was powered by a little spinning hand peddle. The invention came into use during the Industrial Revolution with the purpose of increasing performance in the clothing industry. Elias Howe, American mechanic, built his own sewing machine using similar method; however his major contribution was to have the needles moving away from the point, beginning at the eye. In 1846, Howe was awarded the first US patent for a sewing machine using a lockstitch method. After attempting to attract interest in England, he returned to America. At his arrival his learned that various people has broken the term of his patent. He went to court and won the case for patent infringement. Howe then sold licences to major manufactures in America. The first electric sewing machine was developed and introduced to the market in 1889.
