 The Invention of Telephone

By: Yue Wang

According to Wikipedia, the telephone which is a point to point transition system; allows people to communicate with each other over long distances (Wikipedia: Telephone). The telephone was developed by Alexander Graham Bell and others in the mid 1870s. Alexander Graham Bell was an eminent scientist and inventor. Because both his mother and wife were deaf, he began his research on hearing and speech. This further contributed to the successful invention of the first practical telephone (Wikipedia: Alexander Graham Bell). The development of technology has caused the shape of the telephone to change a lot. Now telephones are much smaller and nicer. Old model telephones are even used as a decoration. The invention of telephone has greatly benefited people’s lives by making communication easier. People now depend on the telephone; they use it very often in their daily lives. One reason for this dependence is because the telephone contributed to the increased efficiency of business. It is essential to have telephones in offices to facilitate communication between employees and clients or employers and business partners to name a few. Overall, the telephone is a great invention that changed people’s lives by offering an easy method of communication.

The Telephone

by Sixuan

Since the mid of 19th century, a lot of inventors were working on the project of inventing a telephone. The idea was first mooted as inventing a “speaking telegraph” in 1844, and the apparatus was soon named “telephone” instead. Inventors came out various designs and equipments at the time. Among them, American inventor Alexander Graham Bell(March 3, 1847 –August 2, 1922) is well-known for gaining the first patent on his telephone invention. His telephone design includes two receivers and a wire. By speaking to the receiver, a membrane in the receiver can vibrate with the voice in the magnetic field and cause undulatory currents, which will then travel through the wire and be received in the distant receiver. A disc in the distant receiver thereby vibrates and creates sound waves in the air. Bell patented the design on January 30, 1877, and other inventors improved his design thereafter. (Wikipedia)

The Telephone and Graham Bell

by Greta

After reading so much about the telegraph, one begins to wonder how this invention became what we use today:  the telephone. The telephone, as well as the telegraph, has its own story.

It is know that since the invention of the telegraph, several scientists have worked on devices that could transmit sounds. However, the first finished telephone was invented in the 1870’s by Elisha Gray and Alexander Graham Bell independently. These devices were able to transmit speech electrically by a single wire, and were developed as a direct result of trying to improve the telegraph. After a tedious legal battle between Gray and Bell, the Patent was granted to Alexander Graham Bell in 1876.

Bell’s extensive knowledge of music encouraged him to find a way to surpass the limitations of the telegraph by constructing a devise that could send several messages over a single wire at the same time. The “harmonic telegraph” he was trying to develop could send several notes over the same wire simultaneously as long as these notes/signals had a different pitch.

He worked on his invention with the help of a young electrician called Thomas Watson. The telephone was only finished on March 10, 1876, starting like this the declining of the telegraph. The first phrase transmitted over the telephone was: “Mr. Watson, come here, I want to see you” by Graham Bell when he was calling his assistant in the next room.

The Telephone

The telephone (from the greek, “tele” far, “phone” voice), is a point to point communication device that lets two or more people, in different locations, communicate with one another. The idea of a “speaking telegraph” was created by Innocenzo Manzetti on 1844, but it wasn’t until 1876 that the telephone was successfully used by Alexander Graham Bell. At the beginning telephones were not exploited, because people could not envision its purpose and usefulness. Now, the telephone is considered one of the most revolutionary inventions of all time since it had a big impact on people’s daily life. The creation of the telephone led to different improved models and technologies such as telephone and satellite networks, cell phones, smart phones, fiber optic cables, undersea telephone cables and others.

 The Telephone

The telephone is a telecommunication device used to send messages from one person to another through sounds, normally a human voice. A telephone’s primary use is to allow people to participate in a conversation over distances. Credit for the invention of the electric telephone was disputed between Alexander Graham Bell and Elisha Gray.
However, Alexander Graham Bell was the first to be awarded a patent for the electric telephone by the United States Patent and Trademark Office in March 1876. Bell’s success with the invention of the telephone was a result of his attempts to improve the telegraph (both the phone and telegraph are wire-based electrical systems).
Now Bell’s invention is widely used in every sphere of life: business, personal and governmental. The telephone consists of a microphone that one can talk into, a speaker which reproduces the other person’s voice, a ringer that makes a sound when a call is being received, and a dial (or keypad on present phones) to enter the number of the person one would like to reach. A land line telephone is connected by a pair of wires to the telephone network, while a mobile phone is portable and communicates with the telephone network by radio. Cordless telephones have a portable handset which communicates by radio with a base station connected by wire to the telephone network and can only be used within a limited range of the base station. Although originally made for simple voice communications, many modern telephones, “smartphones” in particular, have lots of additional commands. Telephones are now able to send and receive text messages, take and store photographs, videos, and music, and surf the World Wide Web.
